Scoring

Pizza Boy

Official record keeping began Memorial Day, 2005, but it was decided over Christmas 2005 to begin keeping track of 1st-3rd place, rather than only 1st place. The Memorial Day 2006 tournament is the first tournament with data for second and third place finishes. Initially, a win counted for one point. Then, when second and third place was also recorded, a win became worth 4 points, 2nd was worth 2 points, and 3rd was worth 1 point.

Due to inevitable scheduling difficulties that were causing players to miss entire events or days during an event and the disadvantage that caused them in terms of points, it was decided that for 2009 on, it would be best to track not only who came in first through third place, but all places, so that a scoring average could be calculated. This way, if you miss games, it will not impact your average (though it was decided that we should keep tracking points earned, as well).

So, the score is now calculated by dividing the sum of your places (1-X) by the number of players (up to 5). If 6 or more people play, then those that finish sixth or worse not only earn 0 points, but their fractional score becomes higher than 1! So, if you finished 6th, your fractional score would be 6/5 or 1.2. (We decided that having more than 6 people play is too many).

In addition, it was decided that if you win first place with five people playing, that is more of an accomplishment than if only 3 people were playing. As such, the points you earn per game is based on the number of people. If you take first place in a game with five or more people, you earn five points. The annual trophy is awarded to the person with the lowest average, where 0.2 is the best you could possibly attain, and 1.0 is if you lose every game, assuming there were only 5 people playing in those games.
